Tape types & features

The most common types of packaging tapes are as follows;

Hot melt polypropylene. Consists of a polypropylene carrier and hotmelt adhesive. Low cost solution for general applications. It has a quick release coating on the adhesive for ease of application  particularly suitable for high speed volume use. Requires some pressure when applied to achieve results. Will not tear and the adhesive performs well in extreme temperatures e.g. cold storage. Can be overprinted cost effectively.

Acrylic polypropylene. Consists of a polypropylene carrier and water based acrylic adhesive. Low cost solution for general applications such as carton sealing. .Requires some pressure when applied to achieve results Will not tear. Can be overprinted cost effectively. Good print reproduction.

Solvent polypropylene. Consists of a polypropylene carrier and solvent adhesive. Higher priced solution for general applications such as carton sealing. Requires minimal pressure when applied to achieve results. Will not tear and has good adhesion but  this tape is becoming less popular due to environmental impact. Can be overprinted.

PVC (Vinyl). Consists of a PVC carrier and a solvent adhesive. Expensive, quality solution for most applications such as carton sealing. Can be torn by hand. Requires minimal pressure when applied to achieve results. Good adhesion but becoming less popular due to environmental impact. Can be overprinted.

Recommended applications

Below is a list of typical applications and the recommended tapes

Cardboard normal conditions - Polypropylene water based acrylic
Cardboard extreme temperature and high volume - Hot melt polypropylene
Polythene all conditions - Vinyl, Solvent polypropylene, polypropylene water based acrylic
Plastics all conditions - Vinyl, Solvent polypropylene, polypropylene water based acrylic

Adhesives

For customers who require improved seal quality and security along with improved structural integrity may choose  hotmelt adhesives. Hotmelt adhesives applied directly to case flaps creates a strong rigid bond to keep boxes sturdy and intact. Any tampering is also more evident due to fibre tear if the seal is broken.

Using hotmelt adhesive  also lessens down time as production lines do not need to be stopped whilst rolls of tape are being changed over.

Hotmelt adhesives are available in three different forms. 12mm sticks and 35mm slugs for low volume applications using hand held glue guns and also a bulk variant for use in high volume automatic machine applicators
